EARLY GOAL GETS 'STUTE THROUGH TO LEAGUE CUP LAST FOUR
Institute booked a BetMcLean League Cup semi-final berth at Newry City's expense thanks to Joe McCready's early goal at the Showgrounds.
'Stute started brightly with Shane McNamee seeing a low effort tipped around the post by Andy Coleman. But, for the resulting corner, Jamie McIntyre fired through a ruck of players before the ball fell for Joe McCready who duly found the net to open the scoring with a backheel.
Despite falling behind so early in the game Newry looked the better side as the first half progressed.
Dale Montgomery fired an effort across the face of goal to which Mark McCabe just failed to connect, while Adam Foley twisted and turned before seeing a shot saved while McCabe then had an effort blocked by Caoimhin Bonner.
After the break Aidan McCauley threatened for 'Stute with a header from Shane McNamee's cross only to send the ball over.
At the other end Stefan Lavery was unlucky to see a shot deflected over, followed by a Foley run down the left with his finish hitting the base of an upright.
Institute looked to extend their slender advantage through efforts from McNamee, Brendan McLaughlin and, right at the end, Ryan Morrow but in the end McCready's early goal proved enough.
