LINFIELD LADIES CLAIM LEAGUE CUP GLORY

Linfield Ladies lifted the NIFL League Cup at Solitude in a thrilling cup final against Newry City Ladies.

In a lively final played in torrential rain it was Newry that created the first chance when Claire Taylor's well timed shot went over the cross bar inside two minutes.

Linfield took the lead in the fifth minute as Kirsty McGuinness hit a low freekick from a central position as she lashed it through a crowd of players beating Dheboara Barbosa.

McGuinness didn't have to wait long to add to her tally. The forward grabbed her second two minutes later as she cut inside to fire the ball into the top corner.

Last years winners got on the scoresheet only a minute after Linfield's second when Brazilian Rayza De Souza hit a powerful drive from twenty-five yards into the bottom corner to make a real match in a goal fest first half.

Newry then equalised on 12 minutes and de Souza scored her second as she hit a half volley into the net from just inside the box after the Blues failed to clear their lines.

In a wide open game Newry where next to threaten when a Celine Curtis shot from the edge of the area just drifted past the right hand post.

The chances where coming thick and fast and The Blues should have gone ahead as Leonita McVarnock missed the target from close range.

On the half hour mark Linfield edged their noses in front when striker Amber Dempster fired powerfully across goal from a perfectly weighted McGuinness pass.

After the break the goals continued to flow. Linfield extended their lead in the 61st minute when Dempster got her second of the night with a half volley finish from the left side of the area. The shot was too hot to handle for Barbosa in the Newry goal.

Soon after McGuinness deservedly got her hat-trick when her well placed volley from a Megan Bell cross put a three goal margin between the sides.

Four minutes later and Blues substitute Alison Smyth made it 6-2 to Linfield when her powerful header from inside the area sealed the trophy.

The game continued to produce chances and Megan Bell almost scored a wonder goal for Linfield after going on a powerful run through the centre of the pitch but her rising shot went over the crossbar.

Newry's captain Grace Murray got a late consolation in injury time when her powerful and accurately placed free kick flew into the top left corner.
