Two first half goals were enough for HW Welders to leapfrog Knockbreda in the Bluefin Sport Championship.
The early exchanges were even at Breda Park but it the Welders who took control with two quick-fire goals, the first coming after 23 minutes when Lukas Gwiazda’s back-post header gave Smyth no chance in the home goal.
HW Welders doubled their lead just six minutes later when veteran midfielder Chris Morrow was on hand to fire home from close range after a block from the Knockbreda goalkeeper fell kindly to his feet.
Knockbreda manager Lee Forsythe made a double change at the break, which paid off as his side pulled a goal back on 74 minutes. Defender Mark Drysdale’s cross was met at the back post by the head of forward David Fearon to reduce the deficit.
The home side continued to press but couldn’t find an equaliser as the Welders moved above Knockbreda into fifth place in the Bluefin Sport Championship.
