Newry City picked up a crucial three points in the push for promotion with this three-goal defeat of fellow challengers Ballyclare Comrades at Dixon Park.

Keith Johnston fired the visitors in front after 12 minutes when he pounced on a poor backpass to dink the ball over Comrades 'keeper Alan Blayney.

Ballyclare enjoyed periods of possession during the first half but couldn't find a way back into the game, although Chris Rodgers did come close not long after the interval while Matthew Parker was thwarted by an excellent stop from 'keeper Steven Maguire.

However, Newry extended their advantage with just under a quarter-of-an-hour remaining after Declan Carville successfully knocked home a spot-kick awarded for a challenge on Mark McCabe.

And McCabe himself completed the scoring on 85 minutes with a composed finish from the edge of the area after being played through on the counter attack by Robert Mackin.
