Larne stand on the cusp of clinching the Bluefin Sport Championship crown following victory over HW Welders at Tillysburn Park.

Tiernan Lynch's side can now only lose the title on goal difference and need only a point from their remaining six games to be mathematically sure of claiming top spot.

After an evenly matched opening period the deadlock was broken on 25 minutes when Benny Igiehon won the ball to work his way through the home defence and fire a half-volley into the bottom corner.

Paddy McNally might have added a second a couple of minutes later only to crash a header back off the crossbar.

The Welders came close to levelling on 54 minutes but David Rainey's downward header was well saved by Michael Dougherty while, at the other end, Ryan Brown pushed Thomas Stewart's low drive behind.

The sides continued to trade chances. Rainey threatened with a free-kick but couldn't make it count before, for Larne, Chris Ramsey directed a header too close to Brown.

However, Larne did double their advantage with 11 minutes to go when Igiehon was brought down inside the box with substitute David McDaid stepping up to convert from the spot.
