The PSNI defeated Portadown at Newforge despite not having a recognised keeper between the sticks for the entirety of the game.
Both regular keeper Jordan Williamson and his number two were unavailable meaning striker Tony Tumelty stepped up to fill the void.
He couldn’t be faulted for any of the Portadown two goals. The first came on 30 minutes when a long ball into the penalty area fell kindly at the feet of Chris Lavery who turned and fired home.
Then the game exploded with four goals inside eight minutes.
Ryan Carmichael doubled the Ports lead on 41 minutes when he hit a sweet strike from 22 yards into the top corner of the net.
Then, on 45 minutes the referee awarded Portadown a free, Lukasz Adamczyk being offside. Ports keeper, Declan Dunne, appeared to take the free quickly by knocking the ball out to Johnny Flynn only for the quick thinking Adamczyk to nip in, steal the ball and slotted it into the empty net.
At the restart Dunne came to the centre circle and seeing Tumelty off his goal line he attempted a long range lob. His effort was blocked by Adamczyk who fired the ball towards the empty Portadown net only to see it scrambled off the goal line. Seconds later Dale Malone brought the sides level when his direct free kick from all of 20 yards curled over the heads of the Portadown wall and into the bottom left hand corner.
All square at half time but clearly Portadown were somewhat shell shocked.
Within four minutes of the start to the second half Malone repeated his trade mark free kick and scored his second of the afternoon, this time from 24 yards out and again over the heads of the wall.
Adamczyk had the easiest of headers on 80 minutes to put the game to bed but he missed the target as did Owen Moody when his header from close range went over the bar.
A late effort from a free kick 20 yards out saw Kevin Braniff’s effort come off the crossbar.
