NEWRY City star John Boyle took a break from his shift at Cadogan Fire Station to collect the NIFWA Championship Player of the Month award.

Boyle - firefighter by day, defender by night - has been putting out fires for Newry in recent weeks, helping them to finish February unbeaten.

The former Warrenpoint Town man said, "Everybody at the club is determined to gain promotion. It's a tough league and we have a lot of hard work to do, but we have been very competitive this season.

"It's nice to receive an award of this nature, but I think my teammates deserve a lot of the credit."

NIFWA Chairman Keith Bailie said, "John is a well-deserved winner of this award. He was a fine player for Warrenpoint for many years and he is now excelling at Newry.

"His commitment to Irish League football is impressive when you consider he has a demanding full-time job.

"Football fans really appreciate the sacrifices guys like John make to entertain us on a Saturday."
