DESERVED THREE POINTS SEES NEWINGTON GO FOURTH

A goal in either half was enough to give Newington a deserved win away to Sport & Leisure Swifts in the Bluefin Sport Premier Intermediate League.

After a scrappy opening it was Newington’s Robbie McVarnock who had the first chance on goal with a long range dipping effort after 8 minutes which was safely gathered by Magill in the home goal.

At the other end, Ryan McAuley should have done better for the home side when he fired high and wide from a good position on 21 after finding space at the back.

Newington took the lead just before the half-hour, as Ciaran Carson finished at the third attempt. Amidst a goalmouth scramble, Newington’s initial attempt was parried away by Magill and a subsequent follow up was dramatically cleared off the line only as far as Carson who drilled a low shot through a ruck of players into the goal.

With the interval imminent Thomas Logan failed to double the visitors lead as he broke free following a mix up in the Swifts’ defence, but couldn’t test the goalkeeper.

Pat McAllister’s Sport and Leisure Swifts side regrouped at the break and had two huge chances to equalise as straight after the restart Stephen Tully’s long throw was drilled agonisingly wide by Patrick Doyle.

On 63 minutes, Kevin Lynch came even closer for Sport & Leisure as his 25-yard free-kick cannoned off the crossbar with goalkeeper Craughwell beaten.

It was to be Newington’s day though – as their dominance was rewarded with ten minutes remaining as McVarnock rose highest to loop a header over the goalkeeper and seal the three points with his third league goal of the season.
