BURNS HANDS BREDA THE ADVANTAGE OVER MALLARDS
Knockbreda got the new campaign off to the perfect start with victory over Ballinamallard United at Ferney Park.
'Breda might have moved in front inside the first ten minutes when a ball was played across the face of goal only for Brendan Bennett to narrowly miss making a connection.
Not long after that Dylan Whiteway headed over for the visitors from close range while, just after the half-hour mark, 'Breda threatened again when Alex Pomeroy cracked an effort against the right post with Bennett unable to tuck away the follow up.
The Mallards best chance of the first half came soon after when Sean McEvoy met Nathan Cashel's cross from the right but could only blast the ball over.
Another Cashel delivery early in the second half caused more problems for the visiting defence before Richard Clarke's shot was tipped over by Jack Hazard.
However, what proved to be the winner arrived on 55 minutes when Anthony Burns volleyed past John Connolly after the ball fell loose from Bennett's header against the crossbar.
Ballinamallard pushed for a swift leveller with Ryan Morris sending the ball wide from distance before Ryan Campbell headed into Hazard's arms with Cashel then denied by an outstretched leg.
And Cashel came even closer in the final moments after working his way into the box only to curl an effort off the upright.
