ARDS marked their return to Clandeboye Park with this ultimately comfortable victory over title challengers Portadown.

Andy Hunter might have given Ards the lead early in proceedings but his header at the back post was ruled out offside.

At the other end Darren Murray created Portadown's best effort when he tested Graeme McKibbin without success.

However, as the first half wore on, Ards began to exert a little dominance. Craig McMillen fired a shot wide on 32 minutes before crossing for Neil Dougan on 41 minutes only for his inrushing teammate to fail to get enough of a touch to cause any damage.

And McMillen came close again right at the break with a dipping left-foot effort which David Miskelly did well to tip over.

But Ards did deservedly take the lead six minutes into the second half after Andrew Mitchell turned inside the area to fire past Miskelly.

They extended their advantage on 74 minutes after Willie Faulkner got on the end of a Paul McDowell through ball to place a shot out of Miskelly's reach.

Portadown pulled a goal back a minute later after
Murray converted from the spot when McDowell was adjudged to have been guilty of shirt pulling.

Ards weren't to be denied the points, making sure right at the end through a James Cully penalty awarded after Garry Breen had handled in the area.
