Andrew Waterworth created the first effort of note on 13 minutes when he got on the end of an Achille Campion flick to test Ards 'keeper Sam Johnston.

At the other end David McAllister's cross caused uncertainty in the Linfield defence before Niall Quinn cleared the danger off the line.

Campion opened the scoring for the Blues just before the half-hour mark. Stephen Lowry released Quinn on the left flank but when his shot on goal was blocked the ball fell for Campion to fire home from 12 yards.

Ards finished the first half strongly with Guillaume Keke and then Michael Ruddy both having chances but neither player was unable to find a way past Gareth Deane.

Linfield doubled their lead early in the second half when Ards defender Johnny Taylor conceding a penalty for a challenge on Waterworth - and it was Waterworth himself who showed considerable coolness to duly beat Johnston from the spot.

Then, two minutes after that, Lowry added a third from the edge of the box with a finish in off an upright.

Kurtis Byrne almost added a fourth with a speculative long range effort which dipped just wide of the target while a later Lowry header suffered a similar fate.
