Glenavon strengthened their claim for a top six finish with this narrow defeat of bottom of the table Institute at Mourneview Park.

Gary Hamilton's side started brightly with Kevin Braniff teeing up both Ciaran Caldwell and Ciaran Martyn during the opening exchanges.

And it was indeed a Braniff left-wing delivery that led to the opening goal after 33 minutes when Caldwell turned home a close range header.

'Stute levelled in first-half stoppage time through Robbie Hume with a 15-yard drive into the bottom corner.

The Lurgan Blues regained the advantage ten minutes after the break, however, when Martyn finished superbly after Kris Lindsay had flicked on a Winkie Murphy free-kick.

Hume proved to be Institute's main threat, almost levelling twice as the game progressed with one effort curling against the woodwork and another being rifled just over from a Stephen Curry cross.
