Chris Rodgers and James Costello in the wars at Stangmore Park (Picture: Darren Kidd/

BALLYMENA United missed the chance to make up a little bit of ground in the race for a top six slot with this scoreless draw at Stangmore Park.

The Sky Blues almost raced into an early lead after hitting the woodwork twice in the opening exchanges.

First Gary Liggett fired a shot against the underside of the bar from around 20 yards then, 45 seconds later, a Gary Thompson effort suffered the exact same fate.

Dungannon hit back through Josh Cahoon who produced a superb save from Dwayne Nelson before Matt Hazley later landed a cross on top of the bar.

But United looked more likely to make the breakthrough, almost going in front courtesy of a 35-yard Tony Kane drive which appeared destined for the top corner while Allan Jenkins fired over with the goal at his mercy from point blank range.

Chances were at a premium after the break with substitute PJ Lavery testing Nelson followed by a Liggett shot into the side netting at the other end.

Then, in the closing quarter-of-an-hour, Liggett looked dangerous again after he was teed up by substitute David Cushley only to be denied by a fantastic Johnny Curran save.

And Curran saved the Swifts again not long after
with another great save, this time to thwart Cushley who had fired low in the direction of the bottom corner.
