First half goals from John McGuigan and Curtis Allen helped Glentoran to an away day victory over Ards.

Ards perhaps edged the opening exchanges with a David Elebert header, well saved by Elliott Morris, coming closest to breaking the deadlock.

Glentoran made the breakthough midway through the first half when, on 25 minutes, McGuigan bagged his second goal of the season with a deft header past Samuel Johnston from a Dylan Davidson free-kick.

Then, three minutes later, William Garrett almost doubled Glentoran's lead with a thundering long range pile driver which rattled the post.

But Glentoran's second did come in the closing minutes of the half after Allen turned home a low cross following a Davidson through ball which put him through one-on-one with Johnston.

And Davidson himself almost got on the scoresheet in stoppage time with a low drive before the ball was turned away for a corner.

After the break a lack of precision cost Ards as they attempted to claw their way back into the game but, ultimately, Glentoran protected their lead with really threatening to extend it.
