BALLYMENA United helped themselves to four goals at Ballyskeagh this afternoon to occupy top spot in the Carling Premiership after the opening round of games.

Roy Walker's side could even cushion the blow of a missed penalty as goals from Alan Teggart, Jordan Baker and a Gary McCutcheon double saw them sweep past the Whites.

Champions Linfield got their defence off to a winning start with victory over Glenavon at Mourneview Park.

David Magee put the Lurgan Blues in front after four minutes but Jamie Mulgrew and Nathan Hanley responded to claim the points.

Glentoran had to come from behind as well to seal the points at Seaview. Colin Nixon opened the scoring early in the second half only for Colin Coates to level with 11 minutes remaining.

But Darren Boyce, making his return to the Glens, popped up in stoppage time to grab a last gasp winner.

Cliftonville needed a late winner, too, to get the better of new boys Carrick Rangers at Solitude.

After being on the back foot for most of the game Marty Donnelly struck with seven minutes left to ensure there was no fairytale start for the visitors.

Indeed, it proved to be a day of late winners in the city, after Darren Murray snatched the points for Donegal Celtic at home to Portadown with just three minutes left on the clock.

Elsewhere, Dungannon Swifts played out an edgy scoreless draw with Coleraine at Stangmore Park.
