GLENAVON thumped seven goals past a sorry Ballymena United at Mourneview Park to move back into ninth spot.

Brendan Shannon marked his return from injury with
the opening goal after just five minutes when he latched onto a Guy Bates through ball to fire into the top corner.

And it was 2-0 nine minutes later after United defender Chris Rodgers was caught in possession by Bates who laid the ball off for Ciaran Martyn to knock home.

The Lurgan Blues added to their tally ten minutes before the break after Mark Farren latched onto a long Shannon punt forward to tuck the ball past Nelson.

United skipper Allan Jenkins might have reduced the arrears slightly right on the stroke of half-time only to turn the ball onto the crossbar.

The Sky Blues fell further behind on 54 minutes when, from a Kyle Neill free-kick, substitute Gary Liggett turned the ball into his own net.

Marc Brown then added a spectacular fifth on the hour with an overhead kick after connecting with an overhead kick from player-manager Gary Hamilton.

The scoring continued six minutes after that when Neill headed into the top corner before Bates completed the rout with ten minutes remaining with a lob over Nelson.
