Kevin Braniff celebrates grabbing Portadown's second goal with Matt Tipton (Picture: Russell Pritchard/

MATTHEW Tipton, making an unexpectedly early return from injury, might have opened the scoring for Portadown after 15 minutes.

Shane McCabe had been released by David Miskelly with the ball reaching Neil McCafferty whose initial effort came back to Tipton who turned the ball onto the post from distance.

Then, five minutes later, Tipton hit the woodwork again - this time the crossbar - with a looping volley.

At the other end Richard Gibson was denied only by a goalline Ross Redman clearance.

The Glens came close again soon after when an Aidan O'Kane 30-yard curling free-kick drifted just over the bar.

After the break Kevin Braniff was presented with a glorious opportunity when he met a Jamie Tomelty cross only to fail to connect properly with the goal at his mercy.

But the deadlock was broken on 69 minutes through Tomelty who fired low into the bottom right corner after connecting with a Neil McCafferty cross from the left.
