Two goals midway through the second half helped Linfield claim the points from Carrick Rangers' visit to Windsor Park.

Robert Garrett tested 'keeper Harry Doherty with the first effort of note inside the first ten minutes with a long range drive which was pushed away while Jamie Mulgrew then saw a shot blocked.

Further chances followed through Niall Quinn and Mark Haughey but the visiting defence remained resolute and unbeaten.

The Blues kept asking questions after the break, eventually finding a way through on 66 minutes when a Quinn free-kick from the left reached Mark Stafford who responded with a strong header to finally beat Doherty.

Then, five minutes after that, Mulgrew embarked on an impressive run which ended with an equally impressive right-foot finish from some 25 yards to double Linfield's lead.
