Institute skipper Michael McCrudden knocked home the only goal of the game to secure victory over Ards at the Brandywell.
'Stute now sit in seventh spot, some 14 points ahead of Colin Nixon's bottom of the table Ards and continued their unbeaten run so far this month.
Ards almost moved in front inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour only for Eamon McAllister's effort to come back off the crossbar.
What proved to be the winner for 'Stute came on 33 minutes when referee Jamie Robinson adjudged that Michael Kerr handled in the box, promptly pointing to the spot, with McCrudden confidently converting.
Ronan Doherty might have doubled Institute's lead soon after only to be thwarted by a smart save from keeper Sam Johnston.
And McCrudden also came close after the break, striking an upright from a free-kick.
But Ards almost snatched a point right at the end when only a reaction save with his feet by Martin Gallagher prevented McAllister from finding the net for the visitors.
