McLELLAN GUIDES SKY BLUES TO VICTORY ON HIS DEBUT

MICHAEL McLELLAN, on his Ballymena United debut, helped the Sky Blues to an unexpected victory over his old club Portadown at The Showgrounds.

With the Ports coming into the game on the back of a win over Cliftonville while United had lost to Ards in their most recent outing all signs pointed to another three points for the visitors - and so it proved in the opening exchanges with Darren Murray edging them in front after 21 minutes when he turned home the loose ball from a Gary Twigg effort that had come back off the crossbar.

Indeed, a few minutes earlier, the woodwork had denied Kevin Braniff when his shot from the edge of the area had come back off the inside of an upright.

However, United levelled on 52 minutes when McLelland - a half-time substitute for Alan Davidson - was first to connect to an Alan Teggart corner with a header past David Miskelly.

Murray might have regained the lead for the Ports only to head wide from a Peter McMahon cross.

But the stage was set, three minutes from time, for United to snatch the points themselves when Teggart converted from the spot after McLellan had been brought down by Miskelly as he burst into the penalty area.
