An Andy Mitchell finish with just under a quarter-of-an-hour remaining handed Glenavon the points from this visit to face Newry City.
The visitors enjoyed the best of the early exchanges with Mitchell testing Andy Coleman with an effort from wide on the right to which the Newry keeper responded positively.
Andy Hall then offered up a rasping effort from outside the area which went just wide of the left post before Conor McCloskey found himself through on goal but Coleman produced a good stop to block the danger.
Glenavon did have the ball in the net on 37 minutes but Eoin Wearen's header from Mitchell's free-kick was ruled out offside.
Newry crafted the first real effort of the second half with Tiarnan Rushe heading just over from Declan Carville's right-sided delivery.
Stephen Teggart then had a chance after side stepping Jamie Singleton just inside the area only to pull the effort wide of the target via a deflection.
However, Glenavon responded with what proved to be the winner on 78 minutes when Mitchell was given time and space to head into the unguarded net after Stephen Murray's cross from inside the box tore the home defence apart.
Newry had a great opportunity to salvage a point in stoppage time, only for Jonny Tuffey to save from Carville after Stephen Hughes had created the opening with a perfectly weighted pass.
