Ards boss Niall Currie watched his side earn a point against Ballymena United (Picture: John McIlwaine/

ARDS closed the gap at the bottom a little with this point at home to Ballymena United.

Ards started brightly, testing new United 'keeper Yohann Lacroix twice inside the opening ten minutes first from a Ryan Henderson volley followed by an Andy Hunter 40-yard free-kick which the Frenchman scrambled to palm away.

Niall Currie's side continued to create the better chances as the game progressed and might have moved in front just after the half-hour mark when Hunter headed narrowly over from a James Knowles free-kick which Lacroix beaten.

The visitors did have their chances too, however, with Mark Surgenor firing a right-foot effort over midway through the first half whilst, towards the break, Gary

Thompson twisted inside the area before forcing a good save from Alan Blayney.

Ards came close again on 58 minutes through David Armstrong after his header from a corner came back off the base of an upright.

At the other end, in a relatively rare attack, Johnny Taylor missed a free header from close range after Ally Teggart had floated over a corner.

The game opened up in the closing stages with Neil Dougan almost grabbing the lead for Ards after Lacroix had spilled an Andrew Mitchell cross from the left before recovering to make the save while Thompson tested Blayney from outside the area.
