PORTS SECURE MID-ULSTER BRAGGING RIGHTS

PORTADOWN moved to within two points of leaders Linfield with this comfortable defeat of Glenavon in the Mid-Ulster derby at Mourneview Park.

Portadown enjoyed the best of the opening exchanges with, perhaps, Kevin Braniff coming closest on 13 minutes after being teed up by a Matt Tipton right-wing cross only for Jay Magee to block with a superb timed sliding tackle.

Garry Breen also threatened but Davy O'Hare was on hand to deny the opportunity.

Braniff came close again three minutes from the break with a deflected free-kick from some 20-yards which O'Hare did well to turn away with his fingertips.

Glenavon crafted their first real effort of note on 53 minutes when a Kyle Neill free-kick struck the outside of an upright.

But it was left to the Ports to open the scoring on 72 minutes when a Braniff met a Conor McCloskey ball from the right to send a volley into the roof of the net.

And the issue was put beyond doubt with eight minutes remaining after Neil McCafferty sent O'Hare the wrong way from a penalty awarded for a Neill foul on Shane McCabe.
