PORTS SINK SWIFTS TO STAY SECOND

PORTADOWN remain in second spot following victory over Dungannon Swifts at Shamrock Park.

Darren Murray fired the Ports in front after just 47 seconds. He made the most of some poor Swifts defending to get on the end of a Kevin Braniff flick to curl the ball into the top corner.

Braniff made it 2-0 on 32 minutes after a long ball fell on the edge of the area for him to tuck past Gareth Buchanan.

But the Swifts pulled one back five minutes later after Jamie Douglas rifled the ball into the corner from the right edge of the area following a David McCullough cross.

And Douglas almost levelled soon after after he lobbed a shot onto the crossbar whilst McCullough was twice denied in the follow-up by David Miskelly.

The second half was a quieter affair with chances at a premium at both ends.

Perhaps the closest either side came was via a Gary Twigg effort which produced a save from Gareth Buchanan while Ports debutant Aaron Traynor had later penalty claims dismissed by referee Andrew Davey.

Braniff and Ryan McStay had further opportunities for the Ports late in the game whereas the Swifts rarely threatened.
