A STEPHEN Hughes double helped Warrenpoint Town to a crucial victory over Glenavon at Stangmore Park.

The win sees Barry Gray's men draw level with Ballinamallard United on 29 points - lifting them out of the play-off spot - and opening up an eight point gap on bottom of the table Ards.

Hughes opened the scoring on 14 minutes after his brother, Daniel, blocked an attempted Kris Lindsay clearance before laying the ball off.

Town 'keeper Jonathan Parr was called into action soon after when he produced a superb one-handed save to thwart a 25-yard Brian McCaul volley.

McCaul did level matters five minutes into the second half, though, from a similar distance after Guy Bates beat Shaun Parr to the ball to create the opening.

But 'Point regained the lead just 11 minutes after that when Mark Hughes combined with Padraig Smith before squaring the ball for Stephen to slot home his second from close range.
