David Scullion twice found the net as the Glens swept past Institute at The Oval.
Scullion moved the Glens minto the lead after just 11 minutes with a close range finish from Marcus Kane's cross.
William Garrett might have made it 2-0 on 22 minutes only to fizz a 30-yard free-kick over the bar.
But Glentoran's second goal did arrive six minutes later following a poor clearance from 'keeper Martin Gallagher which was pounced on by Barry Holland and although his effort was blocked the ball fell for Danny McKee to tap over the line.
And McKee will feel he should have added a third just before the break after getting on the end of a Stephen McAlorum pass to take the ball past Gallagher only to fluff his lines in front of goal.
Glentoran's third did arrive eight minutes into the second half when a Johnny Addis long throw-in was flicked into the area only to be fluffed by Gallagher with the ball falling for Jordan Stewart to touch into the net.
'Stute reduced the deficit ten minutes later through Robbie Hume after his left-foot free-kick from around 20 yards curled past Elliott Morris into the net.
However Scullion restored Glentoran's three-goal advantage towards the end with a chip over Gallagher in off the underside of the bar.
