Cliftonville got the Barry Gray era off to a winning start with victory over Ards in this high-scoring season opener at Solitude.

Jonny Frazer opened the scoring for Ards after five minutes from a Guillaume Keke lay-off before Jay Donnelly levelled for the Reds on 22 minutes with a tap-in after Joe Gormley's initial effort was saved.

Gormley found the net himself after half-an-hour after reacting quickest to a saved Chris Curran shot.

Curran went one better a couple of minutes after that with a curling finish beyond Aaron Hogg but Kyle Cherry pulled one back for Ards just before the break.

Cliftonville restored their two-goal cushion four minutes into the second half when Scott Davidson fired into his own net via a wicked deflection while Gormley added another moments later.

The scoring continued on 65 minutes with Jay Donnelly's second of the afternoon - a header - before Frazer doubled his own tally for Ards with just under a quarter-of-an-hour remaining to wrap things up.
