SKY BLUES LAY SWIFTS SHOWGROUNDS HOODOO TO REST

BALLYMENA United moved up to third in the table with this victory over Dungannon Swifts, their first at The Showgrounds over the Co. Tyrone side since 2007.

United skipper Allan Jenkins headed the Sky Blues in front after 14 minutes when he was allowed to rise unchallenged to meet an Alan Teggart corner.

Johnny Taylor might have made it 2-0 five minutes later when he got on the end of a long free-kick over the top of the Swifts defence only for Gareth Buchanan to prove equal to the challenge.

United came close to furthering their advantage early in the second half when Shane Dolan struck the crossbar before seeing another effort saved by Buchanan.

The Swifts levelled on 61 minutes, however, when Darren Boyce despatched a free-kick low to the right of 'keeper Dwayne Nelson.

But within 60 seconds Dolan restored Ballymena's lead with a close range finish.

And it was almost 3-1 with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining when Buchanan upended Teggart in the area but Alan Davidson could smash his penalty back off the bar.
