Dungannon Swifts and Newry City couldn't be separated at the end of this important clash at Stangmore Park.

The Swifts might have seized the early advantage when, after just three minutes, Newry keeper Steven Maguire scrambled Chris Hegarty's effort away after a Mark Patton free-kick fell into his path.

Dungannon came close again midway through the first half courtesy of Seanan Clucas' finish over the crossbar from Kris Lowe's ball across the face of goal.

Newry had a chance to lead at the break. Stefan Lavery delivered a corner which Mark McCabe turned towards goal but Jake Dykes was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

Stephen Hughes then had two efforts on goal early in the second half while, at the other end, Johnny Lafferty saw a back post shot well saved by Maguire as Clucas moved in.

The deadlock was finally broken in Newry's favour with just under a quarter-of-an-hour remaining after Declan Carville turned the ball past Alex Moore for his second goal of the campaign.

But Dungannon earned a point with the equaliser three minutes from time when Paul McElroy tucked away the rebound from a Lowe effort after Jarlath O'Rourke had delivered a cross to the back post.
