Danske Bank Premiership champions Crusaders have added Ballymena United midfielder Gary Thompson to their ranks ahead of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers this summer.

28-year-old Thompson joins the North Belfast based side on a three year deal as they transition into a full-time professional operation under manager Stephen Baxter.

Thompson joined Ballymena United in July 2012 from Lisburn Distillery, and spent six successful seasons at the Braid, winning the League Cup in 2017 and the County Antrim Shield twice (in 2012 and 2016) making 194 appearances, scoring 21 goals in the process.

Ballymena United manager David Jeffrey stated on the official Ballymena United website, “We want to say thanks to Gary for all efforts.”

“Unfortunately his time with us here was wrecked with injury, but when fully fit he definitely gave of his best and certainly, he would also say himself, was playing some of the best football of his career earlier this season up to his injury.”

Gary joins former team-mate Kyle Owens as the second officially confirmed new arrival at Seaview this summer, with goalkeeper Brian Jensen and Darren Murray (Portadown) two notable departures from Crusaders.
