Cliftonville produced a competent, workmanlike performance to defeat Carrick Rangers by three goals at Solitude.

Joe Gormley edged the Reds in front after 20 minutes after slotting the ball beyond 'keeper Harry Doherty following a one-two with Rory Donnelly.

That was how it stayed until the closing moments of the first half when Gormley doubled his account - and Cliftonville's hold on the game - after turning home the rebound from Rory Donnelly's initial saved effort.

Jay Donnelly might have added a third on 77 minutes but could only hammer the ball against an upright as he faced Doherty down.

But Cliftonville did move three-up a couple of minutes after that following Daniel Hughes' run through the defence to take the ball around Doherty and into the unguarded net.
