At the weekend Danske Bank Premiership side Warrenpoint Town departed for Russia to continue their pre-season preparations against two sides from the Murmansk region.

The trip became a possibility following the establishment of sporting and cultural ties between Newry & Mourne District Council and their counterparts in the Municipality of Kirovsk.

As well as two friendlies, Warrenpoint coached local children and participated in training sessions with clubs from the area.

First up, on Saturday, was a meeting with Amateur side FK Apatit Kirovsk.

Barry Gray's side moved in front after 15 minutes through Timmy Grant but were pegged back onto level terms 10 minutes before the break.

The locals then seized the advantage with a second goal on 52 minutes but 'Point equalised with 20 minutes remaining after Ruairi Devlin rounded the 'keeper to slot into the empty net.

With no further scoring a penalty shoot-out was required to separate the sides with Apatit emerging 5-3 victors.

The tour continued on Sunday against FK Khimik.

A Daniel Hughes goal on 23 minutes handed the visitors the lead at the break, an advantage they held until 12 minutes from time.

On this occasion, both sides were happy with the outcome, deciding to forego settling the tie on penalties.
