Linfield closed the gap at the top back to seven points with this narrow defeat of Glentoran at The Oval.

The first moment of danger in a largely quiet first half came when Niall Quinn delivered the ball across the face of goal but both the inrushing Cameron Stewart and Andrew Waterworth failed to make contact.

At the other end Chris Lavery did well to fend off the attentions of a number of defenders before releasing Steven Gordon only for his goal bound effort to be scooped off the line at the last moment by Reece Glendinning.

Moving into the second half, a Quinn corner from the right was blazed over by Jimmy Callacher despite being unmarked on the edge of the six yard box.

However, the deadlock was broken on 62 minutes when a Glendinning free-kick was knocked on by Stewart into the path of Waterworth who didn't waste the opportunity to despatch it into the net from six yards.

Glentoran's best chance of an equaliser came with ten minutes remaining when a Jonathan Smith effort was blocked with Lavery's follow-up well saved by 'keeper Alex Moore.
