Crusaders star Gavin Whyte has been rewarded for his superb season in the Danske Bank Premiership with a first ever call up to the senior Northern Ireland squad.

The 22-year-old winger picked up both the Player Year and Young Player of the Year trophies at the recent NI Football Awards to go with his Ulster Footballer of the Year award after a remarkable season which seen him score 21 goals in 36 league games en route to the Danske Bank Premiership title.

His form has captured the attention of international manager Michael O’Neill ahead of the summer tour of Central America, as he has been included in the 22-man squad for friendlies against Panama (29 May) and Costa Rica (3 June).

Whyte has already been previous capped seven times at Under-21 level for Northern Ireland and joins five other former NI Football League alumni in the squad (Gareth McAuley, Luke McCullough, Stuart Dallas, Liam Boyce and Paul Smyth)
