A James Cully spot-kick in the closing moments was enough to see progress to the third round of the JBE League Cup.
It put the seal on a gripping final quarter-of-an-hour that contained most of the action at Darragh Park.
Ards had to play most of the game with ten men after Ben Browne's 38th minute dismissal following a melee in the middle of the park.
Dergview had gone in front on 80 minutes when substitute Ryan Mayse beat Ryan Brown with a strong shot into the top corner.
The visitors levelled within three minutes through Danny McKee who cut inside to get on the end of a Jordan Baker pass.
Then, with extra-time looking a distinct possibility, Ards were awarded a penalty after a shot was handled on the line with Cully stepping up to convert, sending 'keeper Jack Boggs the wrong way.
