ARDS emerged victorious from a penalty shoot-out to book their place in the last eight of the Northern Ireland League Cup at Dungannon Swifts expense.
Ards, currently propping up the Premiership table, seized the early advantage when, on 17 minutes, James Cully converted a spot-kick awarded for a David McCullough foul on Craig McMillen.
The Swifts might have levelled early in the second half when Jamie Glackin and Stefan Lavery combined only for the 'goal' to be ruled out offside.
But the pair went one better with a quarter-of-an-hour of normal time remaining after Lavery beat a couple of defenders to tee up Glackin to fire past advancing Ards 'keeper Graeme McKibbin.
Glackin almost struck again in the first half of extra-time. Again Lavery was involved to create the opening but on this occasion his strike partner could only smash his effort against the crossbar.
Ultimately, however, it needed spot-kicks to decide the affair:-
Brennan (Dungannon Swifts) scores 1-0
Gibson (Ards) scores 1-1
C. Lavery (Dungannon Swifts) saved 1-1
Hunter (Ards) scores 1-2
Hazley (Dungannon Swifts) scores 2-2
McCullough (Ards) saved 2-2
Harpur (Dungannon Swifts) saved 2-2
Faulkner (Ards) scores 2-3
Fitzpatrick (Dungannon Swifts) scores 3-3
Roy (Ards) scores 3-4
Ards won 4-3 on penalties
