BALLYMENA United stormed their way into the NIFL League Cup semi-finals with a comprehensive four-goal defeat of Portadown at The Showgrounds.

David Cushley fired the Sky Blues in front after just seven minutes with a low left-foot free-kick from just outside the box.

United skipper Allan Jenkins twice came close to doubling their lead with one effort blocked and another denied by a superb one-handed David Miskelly save.

The Portadown 'keeper also did well to block a rasping Cushley effort late in the fist half while, for the visitors, Gary Twigg came closest but United 'keeper Stuart Addis was alert to the danger.

Mark Surgenor made it 2-0 to United just before the hour with a strong finish after Tony Kane had knocked on a Jenkins ball into the area.

Then, with four minutes remaining, Gary Thompson added a third after he held off the attentions of the Portadown defence to send a left-foot curling shot beyond Miskelly.

The scoring was completed right at the end when Miskelly upended Cushley on the edge of the area with Ally Teggart stepping up to fire home the subsequent spot-kick.
