Larne recorded arguably the greatest result in the history of the club with a 2-1 UEFA Conference League defeat of Danish opponents AGF Aarhus at Inver Park.

In what is their first ever European campaign Larne had already accounted for Welsh side Bala Town in the previous round with two goals and two clean sheets over the two legs.

But even the most diehard Larne fan could not have anticipated victory over Aarhus, nor the manner of the win.

It took Tiernan Lynch's side just three minutes to open the scoring and, as with the Bala home leg, it fell to David McDaid to find the net. A well worked free-kick saw the ball end up in the six yard box for Jeff Hughes but his effort was blocked by the keeper, albeit only as far as McDaid at the last post who duly knocked it home.

Then, after half-an-hour, Larne doubled their advantage. On this occasion John Herron chipped over a cross from the right side of the area for Dean Jarvis to rise highest at the far post and send a bullet header past Jasper Hansen.

There might have been a third after the break but Cian Bolger could only just head wide after connecting with Lee Lynch's corner.

Aarhus handed themselves some hope going into next week's return leg with six minutes remaining courtesy of Alexander Ammitzbøll who sent the ball over for the right with keeper Rohan Ferguson only able to divert it into his own net despite Albert Watson's best efforts at a clearance.
