The Northern Ireland Football Writers’ Association has named Newry City’s Thomas Lockhart as Championship Player of the Month for August.

Midfielder Lockhart enjoyed a fine month, helping Newry City win their first five Lough 41 Championship games. Newry sit three points clear at the top of the division with a 100% record.

Lockhart bagged three goals in the month, including a brace in a 2-0 win over Dergview at Darragh Park.

Lockhart said, “I’m delighted to be selected as Player of the Month, but I’m even more pleased with the start we’ve had to the season. It’s early days, but we’ve put together a very competitive team and we’re capable of building on our strong start.

“Friday night’s win over Ards was special, as there was a big crowd there. It’s great to be back playing in front of supporters, after a long period without competitive football.”

Lockhart is the first man to win the Championship award since Ards star Eamon McAllister was named Player of the Month for February 2020. Last season’s Championship campaign was cancelled due to the Covid restrictions.
