Newly promoted Newington got life in the Lough 41 Championship off to a dream start with victory over Dergview on a day that also saw Annagh United, Dundela, Ards and Loughgall start the new season on a winning note.

The Swans stormed to a 4-1 win over Tommy Canning's side, moving in front as early as the first minute when Patrick Downey made the most of a mix up in the visiting defence.

Two goals in quick succession with around a quarter-of-an-hour on the clock from Richard Gowdy and Darren Stuart put Newington into a commanding position. Calvin McCallion pulled one back for Dergview midway through the first half but it wasn't enough to spark any sort of comeback with Stuart making doubly sure of the points for 'Ton on 74 minutes.

It was a great start to the campaign, too, for Loughgall as they swept to a two-goal defeat of Warrenpoint Town at Lakeview Park. Scoreless at the break, Jamie Rea opened the scoring on 52 minutes before Benji Magee marked his debut with a second late in the game.

Annagh United, runners-up last season, also hit two without reply at home on their way to victory over Knockbreda. Summer signing Conor Mullen kicked proceedings off late in the first half with a back post header before the experienced Stephen Murray doubled up with five minutes remaining.

Ards scored two on the road as they secured victory over HW Welders at the Blanchflower Stadium. Greg Hall edged Matthew Tipton's side into the lead early on with a confident finish following a defensive error with Patrick Cafolla marking his debut for the club with a low driven effort in the closing moments.

Dundela needed just one goal to get the better of Institute at Wilgar Park courtesy of Christopher Rodgers' stunning strike just before the hour while, at Dixon Park, Ballyclare Comrades and Ballinamallard United shared the spoils in a scoreless draw.
