A Corey McMullan goal late in the second half gives Ballyclare Comrades a slender advantage going into the second leg of the Championship Pre Play-off tie with Institute on Friday night.

McMullan struck on the eve of his 21st birthday with a sweetly hit low shot from the edge of the box that fizzed past 'keeper Martin Gallagher after Chris Trussell had laid the ball off.

Ballyclare had started the game brightly with Kevin Lynch and then Dean Youle causing moments of anxiety within the visiting defence inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour.

Despite this promising start the remainder of the first half was largely dominated by both defences with clear cut chances at something of a premium.

Trussell almost broke the deadlock on 58 minutes, only to see his 25-yard free-kick tipped over by Gallagher while, at the other end, Niall Grace headed just wide from six yards.

Institute almost edged in front six minutes after that when Stephen O'Donnell clipped the ccrossbar before Sammy Morrow brought the best out of Comrades 'keeper Paddy Flood.
