Knockbreda Reserves defeated Crusaders by two goals to claim the George Wilson Cup at Seaview.
The East Belfast side bounced back from defeat in last year’s final against H&W Welders U20 to end the season on a high in the final game of the entire 2018/2019 season.
It was the Championship Development League side who took the lead on 41 minutes through David Fearon who popped up at the back post to fire home the opening goal.
A nasty looking injury to Knockbreda’s Robert McNulty resulted in the defender being stretchered off as the young Crusaders side looked for a way back into the game.
Josh McGreevy had an effort which flashed across the front of Piaras Toolan’s goal on 58 minutes, before three minutes later Tom Mathieson let fly with a long range effort which flew narrowly over.
Knockbreda held firm defensively, and it was Mathieson who nearly sent the game to extra time when he forced a fine save from Toolan from close range with two minutes left of normal time.
It was Martin Briggs’ side that clinched the cup in stoppage time when man of the match David Fearon broke away to fire a stinging shot at goalkeeper Ryan Scutt, the Crusaders stopper could only palm the ball into the path of Lee McGreevy who sparked wild scenes of celebration by tapping home his side’s second and final goal.
