Linfield boss Phil Lewis has praised his side’s ‘incredible will to win’ after they secured a historic fourth successive league title.
The Blues won 10-0 at Derry City on Wednesday night to pip Sion Swifts to the title on goal difference - dropping just nine points across their 18 matches this season.
“It’s a great night for everyone involved with the club but especially the girls who have worked so hard all year,” Lewis explained after the match.
“Saturday (losing the Irish Cup final) was a huge disappointment for us all and we were looking for a big response and we got it.
“In the second half we were absolutely tremendous playing into a very strong wind and rain.
“When the seventh goal went in our thoughts turned to shutting up shop and managing the game out, which is exactly what we did.
“Throughout the season this team has responded really well to setbacks - a lot of them have come through our academy and they have an incredible will to win.”
The league title ensures the Blues will return to the Champions League next season - earlier this campaign they defeated Greek champions PAOK in the group stage.
“The Champions League this year was outstanding and we are already excited about next season,” added Lewis.
“As always we will be looking to strengthen the squad and continually monitor the underage players coming through because the system here is incredible.
“Both Sion and Glentoran pushed us all the way this year, there really was no room for error and they deserve a lot of credit, but we are the champions.”
