PREVIEW: WOMEN'S PREMIERSHIP GAMEWEEK 16

The Danske Bank Women’s Premiership continues tonight as we preview the matches in gameweek 16 of the 2019 campaign.

League leaders Linfield sit out this round of action due to their participation in the Champions League while the tie of the round sees Crusaders travel to Sion Swifts.

Cliftonville Ladies v Comber Rec. Ladies (venue: Solitude; kick-off 8pm)

Cliftonville's form had improved in recent weeks with a thumping 5-1 North Belfast derby victory over Crusaders before a credible late draw against Glentoran. However, they slumped to a 5-2 home defeat against Sion Swifts last time out. This is the first of successive home games for the Reds against the bottom two in the league, and they will be favourites for the points here.

Comber Rec. have just one point from their 13 league matches to date and have conceded 46 goals across their last four outings. The Reds have triumphed in the two meetings earlier in the campaign by scorelines of 7-0 and 4-0 respectively.

Derry City v Glentoran Women (venue: The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium; kick-off 8pm)

Glentoran’s title ambitions were dealt a huge blow on Monday night as they slipped to a 3-2 home defeat against Sion Swifts. The East Belfast outfit remain second in the standings but have now played a game more than both Sion - who have the same points tally - and Linfield, who are two points clear at the top.

The Glens will however be strong favourites to defeat the Candystripes - who have lost eight of their last nine league outings. The hosts only went down 1-0 in their most recent clash, at Seaview against Crusaders, but this will be yet another huge test for Kevin McLaughlin’s side. Kerri McIntosh, Jenna and Emma Doherty are among the absentees for Derry, while Nicole McCauley is also questionable as she is carrying a quad injury.

The Glens have won all nine previous meetings between the sides, and have won each fixture 7-0 this season.

Sion Swifts Ladies v Crusaders Strikers (venue: Melvin Sports Complex; kick-off 8pm)

Sion Swifts are now right in the thick of the title race following their exhilarating 3-2 victory at Glentoran last time out. They are now just two points behind league leaders Linfield and will leapfrog the Blues - who do not play this gameweek - should they collect three points in this fixture.

Sion are now unbeaten in all 11 league matches since their narrow opening day loss at Linfield and will be a major test for the Crues, who have won consecutive matches - they hammered Comber Rec 11-0 before edging out Derry City 1-0 last week.

The Crues only went down by a single goal in their trip to Strabane earlier this season but did lose 4-0 in the reverse at Seaview in June, and the hosts will be favourites to continue their strong recent form.
