Conor Downey (37)

Banbridge Town continued their promotion push with this defeat of Newington at Crystal Park.

For the first half-an-hour or so the game produced little by way of scoring chances.

However, as the half wore on Town's Fra McGuinness and Kevin Anderson gained more and more control of midfield, allowing Neil Clydesdale more space in which to show his ability to pick out passes and recognise space behind the defence and the pressure on the visitors back four began to mount.

The breakthrough came in the 39th minute when James Wilson, from an advanced position fired in a deep cross from theright. Jodd Todd chased the ball down, turned his marker and fired in a shot which Dean Smyth in the visitors goal could only parry. Darren McGrath had a brief involvement in the rebound but it was Conor Downey who fired home to give Banbridge a slender half time lead.

Newington might have levelled just before the hour when Sean Begley tested Gerard McErlean with a rasping drive but the home 'keeper was alert to the threat.

And McErlean was called into action again with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining when he made the ball safe following a goalmouth scramble.

However, Newington's hopes of salvaging something from the game were hindered when they suffered the dismissal of both Conal Burns and Richard Gowdy in the final ten minutes.
