NEWINGTON YC WIN ON AWAY GOALS TO SECURE CHAMPIONSHIP 2 PLACE

NEWINGTON YC will compete in Belfast Telegraph Championship 2 next season following their promotion play-off victory over Dollingstown.

The Amateur League champions defeated their Mid-Ulster opponents 2-1 last night at The Cliff in Larne, overturning Tuesday's 3-2 reversal at Planters Park to win on away goals and progress to the next level of local football.

Newington needed just six minutes to level the tie on aggregate after a Cormac Brannigan cross was turned into his own net by a Dollingstown defender.

Then, on 26 minutes, they moved in front for the first time through a Liam Bradley header from a tight angle.

Dollingstown did pull one back three minutes later after a Neil Clydesdale free-kick went in off an upright.

However despite both sides having their chances after the break Eamonn McCarthy's side managed to hold onto their advantage to book their Championship place.
