MATTHEW Burrows struck three minutes from time to salvage a point for Glenavon at Mourneview Park.

The home support almost had cause to celebrate early in proceedings when new signing Guy Bates just failed to connect with a Kyle Neill ball across the face of goal.

Visitors Glentoran might have seized the advantage on 23 minutes after Andrew Waterworth got an effort on target only to see Andy Coleman save well.

And five minutes after that the ball bizarrely ricocheted onto the Glenavon crossbar after an attempted clearance from a Stephen Carson effort.

For Glenavon, Guy Bates came closest nine minutes from the break with a header tipped over by Elliot Morris.

But the deadlock was broken a minute from half-time when Sean Ward nodded the ball through for Waterworth to smack home.

Bates looked threatening for Glenavon again around the hour mark with a 25-yard free-kick which fell just wide.

Gary Hamilton's side eventually found the net with three minutes remaining after the visiting defence failed to clear the ball allowing Burrows to rifle it into the top corner out of the reach of Morris.
