Jimmy Callacher helped himself to a hat-trick as Linfield returned to the top of the table with victory over Newry City.

Callacher opened the scoring after ten minutes with a powerful header past Andy Coleman after Joel Cooper swung over a corner.

Newry might have levelled midway through the first half only for Thomas McCann's effort, which looked destined for the top corner, to be superbly kept out by Roy Carroll.

However, Callacher extended Linfield's advantage just after the half-hour mark with another header, this time from a Kirk Millar corner from the left.

That was how it stayed until the 70th minute when Kevin McArdle pulled one back for the visitors with a deflected effort beyond Carroll.

But, a minute later, Callacher claimed the match ball to complete the scoring with his third header of the game from Niall Quinn's cross.
