Warren Feeney kicked off his time in charge of Ards with an important home defeat of fellow strugglers Newry City, a win that lifts the North Down side off the bottom of the table.
Obviously being boosted by having a new man in charge Ards were on the front foot right from the off although Newry's Ger Pender had the best chance of the opening exchanges with a low 25-yard drive which Sam Johnston did well to save.
However Mark Kelly opening the scoring for the hosts after 27 minutes with a guided header past Steven Maguire into the bottom corner after David McAllister delivered a cross from the left.
Then, on 30 minutes, Damien McNulty made it 2-0 after rising highest to meet a Josh Kelly corner from the left, giving Maguire no chance.
Not content to rest on their laurels Ards started the second half in attack mode with Michael McLellan trying his luck from 16 yards only to find Maguire equal to the challenge.
Mark Kelly did have the ball in the net after that, but his 'goal' was ruled out offside.
Newry reduced the deficit on 55 minutes, though, when Pender got his head to a Darren King cross from the right to beat Sam Johnston from close range.
But Mark Kelly restored Ards' two-goal cushion with his second header of the afternoon on 65 minutes ... and might have claimed a hat-trick later in the game only to nod the ball just wide.
