Glenavon moved up into third spot overnight with a Friday evening defeat of Newry City at The Showgrounds.
Newry started well, creating an early chance through Mark McCabe but he could only fire over following pressure from Rhys Marshall and James Singleton.
Another attempt came when Stephen Teggart found himself through on goal on a counter attack but his finish was directed straight at Jonny Tuffey.
Gary Muir broke the deadlock for Glenavon on 22 minutes. Mark Sykes was brought down by keeper Andy Coleman with Muir stepping up to confidently convert from the spot.
Then, on 35 minutes, Stephen Donnelly added a second after breaking down the right to get on the end of a Sykes forward pass before touching the ball beyond the advancing Coleman.
Newry reduced the arrears just before half-time when Stephen Teggart latched onto Mark Hughes' through ball to fire low past Tuffey at the near post.
Glenavon might have restored their two-goal advantage early in the second half when Donnelly put Josh Daniels through one-on-one but Coleman did well to beat down the threat.
Darragh Noonan was presented with a great chance at levelling just after the hour but his header across goal wasn't capitalised on.
At the other end Conor McCloskey almost scored direct from a corner before Coleman got a touch while a Marshall header was blocked on the line.
